Blogbrief streching here but a brilliantly obsessed American friend in Japan just sent me a link to his latest set of speakers.
I should also mention, for those with a large living room and deep pockets, that they are for sale (postage and handling not included).

OK, reality check!!! When you have to tamper with the bricks and mortar to install (or uninstall) your sound system, you know you have probably gone over the edge and into the abyss. And to think I used to laugh at friends who made holes in their car's back parcel shelf to accommodate the speakers which took up the entire boot... Amateurs!!

I'm glad you noticed that bit too. I took it as a message that no matter how hard you try to reach perfection, there's always someone else going to come along and say "A permanently built-in concrete horn would be even better".
My friend is clawing his way back but I'm a bit sad about this as I admired his dedication and lived vicariously through it - you should have heard Tibetan chants on his old system. Scared the b'jesus out of me.

This reminds me of the Duntech monitors at Poonshead. They're 8ft tall, weigh 250kg each and cost around thirty thousand dollars. I can't tell what's so good about them, but they look cool.

They sound similar to (one of ) the pairs I got to hear at his place. These ones were in hand built cabinets and used a driver from a 1930's speaker or something. Ran through a Macintosh Valve amplifier and something he'd built himself. He then treated me to a "sister" copy reel to reel studio tape of a Miles Davis studio session. Incredible really, my ears weren't worthy but I remember the effortless power even at low levels. Special moment, clever man.

Hey this comment has been invisible for the past 5 days. I had the valve and solid state amplifier discussion with him, I said about two words, the rest nodding sagely for two hours. The man designs semi-conductors and loves valves. When he speaks, I listen. Apparently it's the ambiguity.
